A Simple Guide to Industrial Design and How to Achieve it for your Home

20 October 2022

Industrial design has been one popular way of designing a home. Exposed bricks, pipes, rafters, large open spaces, etc. are all aspects of an industrial design. When we read the word industrial design, the first thing that comes to our mind is a factory, since industry relates to it. But industrial design has got nothing to do with a factory. So, if you are one of those who are looking to design the home the industrial way, do not worry. You don’t have to go to an abandoned factory to get ideas from there.

Industrial design is more about displaying all the building materials which otherwise would have been concealed. Industrial design is typically about adding a touch of rawness and unfinishedness to your home. To add an industrial look to your space, you just need to look for pieces that are all about function. The concept of industrial design is not new. It has been there for a very long time, and later this concept has been a go-to choice for many people.

People sometimes do not choose an industrial design because they feel incorporating it into the house can be a task, but this is definitely not the case. It is as simple as any other kind of interior design choice. You just need to be a bit more careful with the pieces that you choose, because you cannot afford to ruin the look of your space by picking up the wrong pieces. Thus, just some rational and cautious choices can help you achieve an industrial look for your place.

But if you still feel a bit stuck, do not worry. We have listed down some tips that can guide you throughout your design journey.

1. Exposed pipes and ducts

The easiest way of achieving an industrial look is through pipes and ducts. People usually conceal them, but we suggest you not do that. Let them be visible and see the look that it gives. This is the cheapest way to achieve an industrial look. You must have heard about the concept of warehouse apartments. If not, don’t worry, you have us. These are basically old factories that have been converted into apartments for people to live in. Converting a factory into a residential space can sound a bit daunting, but all you need to do is leave some fixtures unconcealed and then see the magic that it creates.

2. Wood and metal surfaces

You might have visited a factory at some point in your life. The most obvious thing that you notice at a factory is the plethora of wood and metal surfaces. This is something you could even try at home. Look for metal and wooden pieces that can be made a part of your home décor. It’s no wonder that earth tones and neutral colour choices are perfect for industrial space. You can also do the same and incorporate these tones and colours into your space. You can even have a wooden table with metal chairs, a kitchen with stainless steel counters, etc.; all of this can help to a great extent.

To achieve more of a metallic look, you can also opt for colours such as grey. Make one of your walls grey to achieve a chic steely look.

3. Use vintage furniture and accessories

Lastly, do not forget to add vintage furniture with the above two options. Interiors that are designed in an industrial way mostly use a lot of furniture made of wood and metal. The reason is, only these two materials have the capability to give an industrial feel. You can even look for furniture pieces that are antique. Antiques literally have the ability to transform your space in a way such that it does not just look industrial but, at the same time, it gives a luxurious look.
