15 March 2023

Enter: rattan. Yes, rattan is a trend. It is a trend that has been in the interior design business for ages. It is popularly used by interior designers to bring the look of the home closer to nature. Connecting your inner house with nature is a trend that never goes wrong. There are various ways to give a rattan look to your home. But before we jump on to the tips that will help you achieve a rattan look for your space, let us just quickly understand what rattan actually is and how it came into existence.

Rattan is a type of naturally renewable palm that is most commonly found in the tropical jungles of Southeast Asia. The material is popularly known for its hardiness. It grows fast, is tall, and is typically a strong type of wood. Aside from being wood, it is also extremely light weight, durable, sustainable, biodegradable, and, most importantly, affordable. Because of the numerous benefits that this material offers, it has become a popular choice among interior designers.

Rattan gained popularity during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was typically used for making furniture and other kinds of household items. It was being used by people only because of its ability to survive in hot climates and also because of its resistance to pests. Slowly and steadily, rattan flourished in the British Empire, and by the end of the 20th century, furniture made from rattan was seen on the streets of the United States.

With the amount of popularity and the variety of benefits that this material has, it is always a good option to use furniture that is made of rattan. So, here is a list of ideas for giving your home a rattan look.

1. Use rattan to in outdoor and indoor-outdoor spaces

Rattan is best for outdoor spaces, but it can also go well with indoor-outdoor spaces. But if you are planning to use rattan inside your house, make sure that you mix it with plenty of opposing furniture, such as stone, iron, cement, and wood, when using rattan in an outdoor space.

While using rattan in an outdoor format, you need to keep a few things in mind. Rattan is mostly used in warm and dry places. So, you need to see that it never comes in contact with water. Even a little water can cause warping. If you accidentally spill some water on it, make sure that you dry it up using a hair dryer, or you can even keep it out under the sun. You also need to be cautious when exposing rattan to direct sunlight, since direct exposure to the sun will cause the fibres to become weak and brittle.

2. Use cane or wicker, which are derivatives of rattan

If you are a person who is in love with the colour and texture of rattan furniture, then you will mostly like cane furniture. Cane is a material that is produced from the outer shell of the rattan stock. The cane material is then woven into a variety of patterns, and then it is used to make furniture. Just like rattan, furniture made from cane is eco-friendly, lightweight, and easy to clean.

Another material that you can use instead of rattan is wicker. Wicker can be woven from rattan, and if you are someone who is touched by the look of wicker, you can always use it in your outdoor space or indoor-outdoor space. Before you use wicker, do not forget that wicker tends to make a big statement, so you need to use it as a one-off decorative accent. Consider using a wicker basket to store throws and remotes. It can even be used as a singular statement piece. One large wicker piece is more than enough for an interior space.

3. Use it in the bedroom to get a natural touch

A bedroom is a place that should definitely give off a soothing vibe. This is why people prefer to paint their bedrooms in light neutral tones. Using rattan in your bedroom is another thing that you can do. This is because rattan furniture is always light in colour, so it can go well with any bedroom colour scheme. Try placing a rattan chair in that empty corner of your room to liven it up. You can even consider placing a rattan bench at the end of your bed to add a finishing touch. Another advantage of using rattan furniture is that it is lightweight and thus easy to move if you are thinking of rearranging your room.
